Janet Lynch

"Identifying most closely with the Transavantgarde movement in Western Europe in the late 1970s and 1980s, my paintings also mark a return from abstraction to figuration. They rely on the emotions provoked by colour, and on strong references to mythic imagery and metaphor.

"As a form of neo-expressionism, my work covers a wide range of subject matter and media, ranging from paintings, drawings, large works on paper, and printmaking through to tapestries and computer-generated imagery.

"My art education began with some time spent at St. Martin’s School of Art London in the 1950s, where Elisabeth Frink was particularly kind and encouraging to me. I continued to complete a degree in fine art from Middlesex Polytechnic in the early 1980s. From this time I have worked and exhibited continuously.

"The advent of the technology that made capturing visual experiences available to everyone impelled artists to explore different ways to express themselves. I believe, however, that there is always a longing for narrative.

"After a period of ten years when my work was entirely abstract, I felt a need to connect with the human condition and all its emotional complexities in a figurative way.

"The reference to both mythological and classical subjects is because of their enduring relevance. Intrinsically, people don't change. Their behaviours, aspirations, actions for good or bad, are as they ever have been."
