"This series of work began as drawings and studies from the coastal landscape, which is right on my doorstep. What interests me about this landscape is the colours I find there, and the shapes and patterns; the stripes of a ploughed fields and their margins, or the jagged thrift covered rock of the cliff top, or perhaps the neat lines of planting of cabbages in fields or allotments.
"I develop the paintings as a series of layers, the marks themselves often determining the direction of the work, so that the final painting is instinctive, a summation of mark-marking."
