Emily Powell | The Year of the Tiger

June 23, 2022 - June 30, 2022

Livingstone St. Ives is delighted to host THE YEAR OF THE TIGER, a collection of brand-new works created by Emily Powell which blaze with her trademark colour and joy.

This is the gallery’s inaugural exhibition at the iconic Westcotts Quay, which became Livingstone St. Ives’ newest gallery space in June 2022.

‘The Year of the Tiger’ celebrates the past twelve months of Emily Powell’s meteoric career which has led her to become one of the most important emerging female artists working in the UK today, including invitations to paint the doors of Great Ormond Street Hospital, decorating an egg to celebrate the Queen’s platinum jubilee, the publication of her first book and the birth of her first child.

Emily said, “These paintings are all about my life from lockdown to becoming a parent, as well as having a political element with the events in Ukraine. I painted one lampshade every day whilst Bea was sleeping, even in five-minute bursts. There was no way I could keep all that in: I had to paint it out each evening.”

Director Alicia Livingstone says: “Emily’s work explodes with creativity, liberating her painting from the restrictions of canvas and paper. She paints on what is around her – tables, trays, lampshades, even her garden shed. This is the ethos of folk art, to beautify objects of everyday ritual, imbuing them with significance and celebrating those small, everyday items which form your lived experience. Emily’s gallery signing last year gave her the confidence to take her work to a higher level, taking on more complex and powerful messages both politically for the first time in her work and in terms of the female subjectivity which the experience of motherhood expended to her.”
