This celebration of colour is complex and multi-layered. Most obviously, it is a tribute to the blue of sea and sky, the curved field of colour suggesting a harbour, with a stylised shape at the base of the canvas evoking a sailing dinghy. The suggestion of stripes, both the dark vertical bar to the left and the pale horizontal bar to the bottom of the canvas are evocative of Cornishware, a distinctive blue and white striped pottery specific to the region, while the name echoes that of a local cheese, famed for its rich, creamy sweetness. And the overwhelming, dazzling flat blue of the piece evokes the same feeling of joy and insignificance of standing on a hillside beneath a summer sky, staring into the endless, cloudless blue.
