In this unusual little painting, a bunch of wild foxgloves embody the sultry, buzzing heat of high summer. The long stems rest in a vase which blurs into the background, as if the vibrancy of the flowers is swallowing up all the reality in the scene, and they angle towards the viewer with Kerr’s trademark command of perspective.
A generous appointment of thickly applied paint, almost sculpted onto the canvas with a palette knife, conveys a richness to the composition, with a depth of colour spanning the spectrum from imperial purple to delicate pink, shot through with the fresh, pale green of new leaves.
