This glorious sunset painting shows a halo of light falling onto the calm surface of the evening sea. The darkness is already sliding in around the edges of the scene, as the last of the day’s sunlight turns the clouds to rich orange as if lit from within. The far distant horizon is a line of azure against a near-black sky, and the sun is obscured behind diaphanous, hazy clouds.
