This magnificent, moody seascape appears at first glance to be almost monochrome, as the stark, lowering clouds dominate the canvas and turn the sea to a metallic glitter. But a closer look reveals warm tones of peach and coral above the storm, as well as sky blue and mauve hints in the cloud forms. Far out to sea, breaks in the cloud create dazzling reflections on the surface of the water and the sun, although not directly visible, slices through the centre of the painting. This storm is menacing, but is also a passing state, one of the many eternal faces of the sea.
