Moving Tide, 2021

This glowing apricot canvas is highlighted with tawny mauves and warm coral pinks. It captures the moment when a stray shaft of sunlight catches a wave and turns it to dazzling aquamarine, as the tide recedes like a deep sigh. The horizontal movement of the tide is balanced by the verticality of the cloud formations, bringing both a sense of the eternal movement of the sea and sky, and at the same time conveying a deep and restful sense of peace. Dividing the two, the inky headland forms a fixed point between these monumental forces. Alex’s palette is full of the gentle heat of summer, the warmth from cliffs and sand which greets the evening as it starts to fall.
