Henrietta Dubrey

Porthminster, 2021

Oil on canvas
64 x 47 cms

This abstract expressionist painting transmutes the stunning beach at Porthminster into colour field masterpiece; two primary blocks of red and yellow divided by a pale, confident stripe. In contrast to the layered depth of the blocks, this stripe is opaque and flat, slicing the blocks apart as if in response to the subtle shading of red which may have started to creep into the top edge of the yellow block. Intriguing and imposing, this painting eschews gestural mark-making in favour of the language of pure colour.
