Protecting the Fishing Fleet, 2021

This patchwork of images plays with symbols of Cornish life – the trawlers, the ubiquitous seagulls, the palm trees that flourish in the not-infrequent tropical gardens and the vivid turquoise of sea and sky. It also echoes another Cornish symbol; the legend of the Mousehole cat.  Each fishing vessel in the harbour has its own guardian; a gigantic domestic cat which stretches out a paw, although whether entirely to protect the boats or to toy with them can only be guessed from the cats’ expression (and suspicions about their capricious nature).
