Protecting the Fishing Fleet, 2021

Mixed media on canvas
100 x 100 cms
Framed size: 104 x 104 cms

This patchwork of images plays with symbols of Cornish life – the trawlers, the ubiquitous seagulls, the palm trees that flourish in the not-infrequent tropical gardens and the vivid turquoise of sea and sky. It also echoes another Cornish symbol; the legend of the Mousehole cat.  Each fishing vessel in the harbour has its own guardian; a gigantic domestic cat which stretches out a paw, although whether entirely to protect the boats or to toy with them can only be guessed from the cats’ expression (and suspicions about their capricious nature). Signed to lower right and verso.
