This is the most abstracted of Emily’s forest series as well as one of the most complex; scale bulges, swells and shrinks as fruits, leaves, trunks and branches shift their proportions, the dark blue foreground in places seeming to overlap the forms as if the forest itself is in a constant state of growth and renewal. The vivid, dominating turquoise form on the lefthand side is balanced by the darker green form on the right; both could be the canopies of trees, simplified into the archetypal shapes of a child’s drawing. Large, bold, intriguing, this painting marks, not just through its playful name but through the ultimate conclusion to which the forms are taken, the end of a significant process. Oil on canvas, signed to lower right and verso.
