Emily Powell

The Importance of Dogs, 2021

Mixed media on canvas
170 x 200 cms
Framed size: Unframed

‘The Importance of Dogs’ was painted on Perranporth beach – please find a video of Emily painting this on our Instagram, by clicking here.

In contrast to Emily’s work depicting a world inhabited solely by cats – dark, lush, intriguing – this world composed of dogs is brilliant with sunshine, the strong reflected light of sea and sand. Interspersed with gaily coloured windbreaks (what would a world for dogs be without humans?) pugs, dachshunds and two superb English Pointers wag, explore and gambol against a foreground of vivid turquoise and green. Each dog’s face registers a different emotion; absorbed in their dog world of smells, sights and the cries of a seagull which swoops out of sight at the righthand edge of the picture. This piece radiates energy and happiness, the in-the-moment immediacy of sunshine and activity. Mixed media on canvas, signed to lower right and verso.
